Septic care is not complicated. It is a short list, done on time, year after year. Here is the whole routine — print it, stick it on the fridge, and your system will outlive your mortgage.
Every Month: Two Minutes
- Watch your drains. Notice if anything slows down. Early is everything.
- Sniff check. Walk past the tank area and the field. No smell is the right smell.
- Spread the laundry. Do not save it all for Saturday. A load or two through the week is kinder to the field.
Every Season: Ten Minutes
- Spring: Walk the drain field after the rains. It should not be soggy weeks later.
- Summer: Keep the field mowed but not scalped. Grass helps it breathe.
- Fall: Keep leaves off the field and gutters draining away from it.
- Winter: Do not pile snow or park vehicles over the tank or field.
Every Year: One Call
Have the outlet filter cleaned yearly. It takes minutes and prevents the mystery slow-drain that looks like a failing field. Pair it with a quick professional look at the system while we are there.
Every 3–5 Years: The Big One
Pump the tank. This is the single most important task on the list. Everything else is support. The pump-out is the main event. Put it on the calendar and do not let it slide.
Never, Ever
Flush wipes. Pour grease down the drain. Drive over the field. Plant trees near the lines. Add a bathroom without checking capacity. These five nevers cause most of the expensive failures we see.
