The drain field is the quiet half of your septic system. It does its job underground, out of sight, for years. When it starts failing, it sends signals — but only if you know what to look for. Here are the seven that matter.
1. Soggy Ground Over the Field
Liquid should sink into the soil, not sit on it. If the ground over your drain field stays wet or mushy — especially in dry weather — the soil is not absorbing like it should.
2. Sewage Odors Outside
A healthy system has no smell. If you catch sewage odors in the yard, particularly over the field area, liquid is surfacing. Do not ignore this one.
3. Backups in the House
When the field cannot take water, water comes back. Toilets, tubs, and floor drains back up — usually starting at the lowest fixture. This is the sign that means call now.
4. Gurgling Pipes
Air trapped by a struggling field bubbles back through your plumbing. If flushing the toilet makes the tub gurgle, the system is under stress.
5. Extra-Green Grass in Stripes
One lush green stripe over the field lines looks nice and means trouble. Nutrient-rich liquid rising to the surface feeds that grass. The rest of the lawn tells the truth by comparison.
6. Slow Drains Everywhere at Once
One slow sink is a clogged pipe. Every drain slow at the same time points downstream — at the tank or the field.
7. It Has Been Years Since Service
Not a symptom, exactly — but the best predictor. A tank that has not been pumped in seven-plus years has almost certainly sent solids to the field. The field may not show it yet. That does not mean it is fine.
What to Do About It
One sign deserves a professional look. Two or more deserve a prompt one. We inspect the full system — tank first, then field — and tell you whether you are looking at a repair, a rest, or a replacement. The earlier you call, the more options you have.
