Septic systems run on bacteria. Helpful bacteria break down waste inside the tank. Many common household products kill those bacteria or clog the system. Knowing what stays out of the drain is half of septic care.
Never Flush These
- "Flushable" wipes. They do not break down like toilet paper. They clog tanks, filters, and fields. Trash them.
- Feminine products and diapers. They do not dissolve. They fill the tank with solids that never break down.
- Paper towels and tissues. Thicker than toilet paper and slow to break apart. Trash, not toilet.
- Dental floss and hair. They tangle into nets that catch everything else. A top cause of filter clogs.
- Medicines. Old pills kill tank bacteria and can leach into groundwater. Use a drug take-back program.
- Cat litter. Even the flushable kind. It is clay and it settles like concrete.
Keep Out of the Sinks
- Grease and cooking oil. Liquid going down, solid clog coming back. It coats pipes and tanks. Jar it and trash it.
- Coffee grounds. They do not break down. They add to sludge.
- Paint and solvents. They kill the bacteria your tank needs to work.
- Harsh drain cleaners. They do not fix septic problems and they poison the tank.
The One Rule
If it is not human waste or toilet paper, it does not belong in the toilet. If it is not water or soap, think twice about the sink. Septic-safe living is mostly about the trash can getting more use and the toilet getting less.
Teach the rule to everyone in the house — especially kids and guests. One person flushing wipes for a year can undo years of good care.
